The genealogy of the McCann family descended from John McCann (1757-1841), who was probably born in Amherst County, Virginia and migrated to Albemarle County, Virginia; Rutherford County, North Carolina; White County, Tennessee; and Lawrence County, Tennessee. His descendants migrated to McNairy County, Tennessee after his death. He was married first to Elizabeth Sims and later to Obedience Belcher.
